Since Master [Kumāra]jīva translated the Amitābha Sūtra, the masters of successive dynasties who have produced commentaries and subcommentaries on it have numbered no fewer than several dozen houses—how flourishing indeed! Master Ji of Ci'en composed two [works]: one titled "General Praise Commentary" and one titled simply "Commentary." These two commentaries alternately present and omit details, mutually illuminating the sūtra's meaning, just as two lamps in a single room illuminate objects all the more clearly. How could one discard either one? Having once read the Records of Chōsai, and having seen what was cited by Master Shōgei, I learned that beyond the "General Praise," there existed another "Commentary," and deeply lamented that it had not been transmitted to the present day. One day, while conversing with the two venerable masters Ega and Rinrui of Chishaku[-in], our conversation happened to touch upon this, and I thus learned that it was still preserved in their collection. I thereupon requested the two masters to transcribe a copy, made rough collations, and stored it in a book-case. Recently, someone carved printing blocks to share it with like-minded companions, storing the blocks in the storehouse of [Mount] Kachō. Consequently, without shame for my rustic ineptitude, I have briefly related the origin and course of obtaining this text, so as to provide this postscript at its end.
