Answer: "Because among these sentient beings there are those who take delight in seeing a pure land, only the name of the pure land was spoken. Furthermore, because sentient beings do not seek nirvāṇa unless they suffer, Śākyamuni acts as a predominant condition upon sentient beings' evil karma, manifesting a defiled land to make sentient beings weary of it; however, it is not that Śākyamuni also actually abides in its defilement. Therefore the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'No Buddha emerges in an impure land; they manifest purity and defilement in order to transform sentient beings.' Thus the Vimalakīrti-sūtra says: 'If sentient beings should enter into disciplined practice through such conditions, the Buddha manifests it for them.'"
