就初信分文復為五:一信、二聞、三時、四主、五處。流支云:此之五句文為證三義,故佛教之:一證是佛說,令物生信;二表異外道經書阿嘔吉義;三為息諍論,知非結集者言。又《智度論》云:說時方人欲令眾生聞之生信,是故此五句名為信分因緣,廣如彼論說。

Regarding the initial division of faith, the text is further divided into five: first, faith; second, hearing; third, time; fourth, lord; fifth, place. [Bodhi]ruci says: These five phrases of text verify three meanings, which is why the Buddha taught them: first, to verify that it is spoken by the Buddha, causing beings to generate faith; second, to distinguish it from the *a-oṃ-kāra* meanings of non-Buddhist scriptures; third, to settle disputes, making it known that these are not the words of the compiler. Moreover, the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* states: 'Stating the time, place, and person is intended to cause sentient beings to generate faith upon hearing it; therefore these five phrases are called the causes and conditions of the division of faith,' as expounded extensively in that treatise.
