1.51

四明次第者，先列聲聞菩薩二眾，是內護眾。次列帝釋，是外護眾。且內護眾先列聲聞、後明菩薩。《佛地論》有四解：一、形相不同，聲聞出家形同諸佛，菩薩不爾；二、處有近遠，聲聞近佛，菩薩遠之；三、戒德有殊，聲聞出家持出家戒，菩薩不爾，隨類化生故；四、欲令菩薩於聲聞所捨憍慢故。

Regarding the fourth, explaining the order: the two assemblies of śrāvakas and bodhisattvas are listed first, being the assemblies of internal protection. Next, Śakra is listed, being the assembly of external protection. Furthermore, within the assemblies of internal protection, the śrāvakas are listed first and the bodhisattvas are explained after. The *Buddhabhūmi-śāstra* offers four explanations: first, difference in appearance: śrāvakas leave home with an appearance identical to the buddhas, whereas bodhisattvas do not; second, distance of position: śrāvakas are close to the Buddha, while bodhisattvas are distant; third, distinction in moral virtue: śrāvakas leave home and maintain the precepts of the monastic life, while bodhisattvas do not, because they take birth according to the category [of beings they transform]; fourth, to cause bodhisattvas to discard pride with respect to śrāvakas.
