The Praise says: The third [point] is listing the names, divided into two: first, listing the names; second, general conclusion. '[And others] such as these, all great disciples' is the general conclusion. The first, listing the names, is divided into eight pairs: first, the pair of internal wisdom and external supernormal powers; second, the pair of ascetic practice and eloquence; third, the pair of awakening to emptiness and knowing illusion; fourth, the pair of renouncing foolishness and transcending desire; fifth, the pair of extensive learning and esoteric practice; sixth, the pair of flowing springs and worthy of offerings; seventh, the pair of transforming greed and removing pride; eighth, the pair of donating medicine and feasting the Saṅgha. Now this is the first. Possessing two meanings, one is called 'Elder': first, high in age and senior in monastic years; second, broad in learning and deep in understanding. In Sanskrit it is *Śāriputra*, here translated as 'spring warbler' or 'śāri-bird'; *putra* means son, and through an abbreviated error it is called *Shelifu*. Before his mother conceived this son, her speech was stammering and halting; when debating with her brother Kauṣṭhila, she was always inferior to her brother. After she conceived the child, her speech was eloquent and nimble, and she prevailed over her brother in debate. Because the mother had much eloquence, she was called 'spring warbler.' The spring warbler is today's mockingbird; being born of her, he is called 'son,' and is also called 'son of the śāri.' The Venerable One was of great brahmin stock. His father was a man of bold talent and erudition who profoundly scrutinized subtleties, and there were no classics or texts he had not investigated. His wife had a dream and recounted it in full to her husband: 'Last night I dreamed of an extraordinary man clad in armor and grasping a vajra, who destroyed all the mountains and chased one down beneath another mountain.' Her husband said: 'Your dream is extremely auspicious. You will bear a son whose wisdom and learning will penetrate the world; he will overthrow the treatise masters and demolish their tenets, inferior only to one man, becoming a disciple of the Buddha.' She indeed became pregnant, and the mother was suddenly intelligent and of lofty virtue, conversing brilliantly and speaking without impediment. When the Venerable One was only eight years old, his fame shook the four quarters; by nature pure and upright, his heart compassionate, he destroyed defiling fetters early on and accomplished wisdom, hence referred to as 'internal wisdom.'
