The Commentary says: Second is the assembly of vast great compassion. This is further divided into three: first, marking their kind; second, listing their names; third, concluding them. This is the first. In Sanskrit, *bodhisattva-mahāsattva*, abbreviated as *bodhisattva mahāsattva*. The practices of a bodhisattva broadly comprise two approaches: first, benefiting oneself, with great wisdom as the foremost; second, benefiting others, with great compassion as the prior. *Bodhi* means awakening, which is the fruit sought through wisdom; *sattva* means sentient beings, who are the beings delivered through compassion. They are named bodhisattvas on the basis of their great vows; designating them through these two as their intentional objects is a possessive compound (bahuvrīhi). Furthermore, awakening is the fruit sought, while sentient being is one's own self: a sentient being who seeks the three bodhis are therefore called a bodhisattva, which is a determinative compound (tatpuruṣa). Regarding "mahāsattva," these bodhisattvas here have their names resounding throughout the ten directions and their stations abide on the eighth ground; to distinguish them from lesser bodhisattvas and signify their difference from the two vehicles, they are therefore called mahāsattvas.
