Answer: "According to the place and the faculties, responding to the śrāvakas it is a transformation Buddha; according to the text and the principle, teaching the bodhisattvas it is the reward body. Because the capacities of those who respond vary, the manifestation encompasses both reward and transformation. When the royal city and Vulture Peak are burned at the end of the kalpa, Śāriputra hearing the sūtra is [facing] the transformation Buddha. When our land is secure and lifespan is enduring, Mañjuśrī dwelling within is [facing] the reward body. The elder Ghoṣila aroused the aspiration upon seeing a three-cubit [body]; five hundred brahmins generated faith upon seeing the body of ashes; boundless bodhisattvas exhaust the upper realms and yet find [virtue] in excess; ordinary beings dwelling in the small sagehood contemplate the sixteen-foot [body] and find it inexhaustible. Now, revealing that the master is supreme and the teaching is unfailingly excellent, the master of the teaching is first indicated to cause the mind of joy to arise."
