The commentary says: The seventh is the pair of transforming greed and eliminating arrogance. "Kālodāyin": the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra says it translates as "Black Radiance," because his body had a black radiance that could illuminate. The Ekottarāgama says: Kālodāyin went out begging for food at night; encountering dark and overcast weather, a flash of lightning revealed him, and a pregnant woman was so terrified, thinking he was a ghost or spirit, that she miscarried; she then went to report this to the Buddha. The Buddha rebuked him and established the prohibitive precept against begging for food at night. Furthermore, he transformed a stingy woman to make her abandon stinginess and greed, as detailed elsewhere. For this venerable one, he frightened a pregnant woman, harming her child, and converted a stingy woman to abandon greed; causing a temporary harm to the correct teaching, he established a rule for a thousand ages; hence it is called "transforming greed."
