The Commentary says: Second, their fullness with water of the eight virtues. Water of eight virtues fills the ponds; the blessings of the Pure Land are superior, and its water differs from that of the ordinary realm, possessing the extraordinary efficacy of the eight virtues and nourishing the wondrous body of the five constants. The eight virtues are: first, limpid and pure; second, cool; third, sweet and delicious; fourth, light and soft; fifth, moistening; sixth, peaceful and harmonious; seventh, eliminating hunger and thirst when drunk; eighth, nourishing the sense faculties after being drunk. The Qingjing jue jing says: the water in the ponds is shallow or deep according to one's thought, rising or falling following one's mind. The Guan jing says: the water rises and falls following the branches and leaves of the lotuses; in the sound of the flowing water, one hears the Three Jewels, emptiness, non-self, and the sounds of the various pāramitās.
