'Have I heard': there are three kinds of 'I'—first, of wrong view; second, of conceit; third, of nominal designation. At the time of the council, Ānanda was already an *aśaikṣa* (arhat), so wrong view and conceit were both extinguished; it was only for the sake of transmission and conversion that he conformed to worldly nominal designations and said 'I'. Regarding 'heard': the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: 'When the ear faculty is undamaged, sound is in a place where it can be heard, and causes and conditions combine, when there is attention and the desire to hear, then there is hearing.' However, in principle there is fundamentally no hearing; it is merely conforming to worldly convention to call it hearing.
