Shandao asked: 'For what reason does he not bid them perform visualization, but directly has them exclusively recite the name? What is the meaning of this?' He replied: 'It is simply because sentient beings' hindrances are heavy, the realm is subtle while their minds are coarse, their consciousness wavers and their spirits flit about, so that visualization is difficult to accomplish. Therefore, the Great Sage, out of pity, directly urged them to exclusively recite the name, precisely because reciting the name is easy; through succession, rebirth is immediately attained.' He also said: 'The World-Honoured One Amida originally made deep and grave vows to gather and transform the ten directions through his light and name; if only they have faithful minds, seeking and contemplating, whether for an entire lifetime above, or down to ten voiced utterances or a single voiced utterance below, through the Buddha's vow-power, rebirth is easily obtained.'
