Answer: "Faith, aspiration, and practice are spoken of relying on the one mind; they do not have a before and after, nor are they fixedly three. For without aspiration and practice it is not called true faith; without practice and faith it is not called true aspiration; without faith and aspiration it is not called true practice. Now, reciting the name arises entirely from faith and aspiration, so within every single utterance, the three—faith, aspiration, and practice—are all perfectly complete. Therefore, they are called causes and conditions of abundant roots of goodness and merits. This is what the Contemplation Sūtra means when it says that because of reciting the Buddha's name, in thought after thought, the transgressions of eighty koṭis of kalpas of birth and death are eradicated. If roots of goodness and merits were not abundant, how could they eradicate transgressions of such great magnitude?"
