The Dharma-sounds of the birds are manifestations produced as the sounds of sentient beings; the Dharma-sounds of the wind and trees are manifestations produced as the sounds of insentient things. Sentient and insentient alike proclaim the wondrous Dharma: all are accomplished through the power of Amitābha Buddha's vows, manifested through his knowledge of all aspects; all are resonant with our own pure karma, transformed through mind-only representation. The Buddha's mind and sentient beings' minds serve mutually as substance and reflection, just as the illumination of many lamps each pervades all yet resembles a single light. Wholly noumenon becoming phenomena, phenomena wholly identical with noumenon; wholly innate nature giving rise to practice, practice wholly resting in innate nature: readers may contemplate this deeply and at length! How could one abandon this Pure Land and speak separately of 'Mind-Only', willingly falling into the ridicule of 'rat-squeak, bird-emptiness' regarding the Pure Land! The first part, distinguishing the two kinds of Dharma-sounds, is concluded.
