"Śāriputra, since Amitābha Buddha attained buddhahood, it has now been ten kalpas." Since the previous passage already explained that Amitābha is currently preaching the Dharma, and this passage explains that his future lifespan is measureless, it now further explains that ten kalpas have passed since his past attainment of buddhahood. Yet the dharmakāya originally has neither attainment nor non-attainment, and kalpas should not be discussed regarding it; the saṃbhogakāya's completion of causes and fulfillment of fruits is called attainment, and the nirmāṇakāya's manifestation of birth for the sake of beings is called attainment—kalpas may be discussed for both of these. Moreover, because the dharmakāya is revealed through cultivated virtue, attainment and kalpas may also be discussed regarding it; for the saṃbhogakāya there is nothing newly acquired, and the nirmāṇakāya is like the moon reflected in rivers, also having neither attainment nor non-attainment, so kalpas should likewise not be discussed. However, the attainment of the path by all Buddhas each has root and trace; the root ground cannot be fathomed at all, and speaking provisionally from the trace of manifesting attainment in Sukhāvatī in the west, it has been ten kalpas since his attainment of buddhahood. That is, for the three bodies, when one is attained, all are attained; it is also discussing attainment in terms of neither attainment nor non-attainment.
