Fifth, explaining the characteristics of the teaching: This [sūtra] is subsumed within the Mahāyāna Bodhisattva Piṭaka; it was, moreover, spoken spontaneously without request, sustained by thoroughgoing great compassion, and is able to enable sentient beings in the final dharma age who have many obstacles to ascend directly to non-retrogression by relying upon it. Therefore, even after the canonical Dharma has perished completely, through compassionate mind and vast vows this sūtra will specially be preserved to remain in the world for a hundred years, extensively delivering sentient beings. It is like the agada medicine that cures all ten thousand diseases, absolutely incomparable, perfectly fused, and inconceivable. The profound storehouse of the Avataṃsaka, the secret marrow of the Lotus [Sūtra], the essential mind of all buddhas, and the compass for all ten thousand practices of bodhisattvas do not go beyond this. If one wished to praise and expound it extensively, an exhaustless kalpa would not suffice; those who possess wisdom will naturally know this.
