Daohui's record states: Broadly classified, this sūtra has ten distinct sections. First is the introductory teaching, namely the "Introductory Chapter"; second is the principal teaching, from "Cunda" through "Adamantine Body"; third is the teaching on dissemination, from "Virtues of the Name" through "Four Inversions"; fourth is the teaching on the buddhadhātu, from "Tathāgata-Nature" through "Moon Parable", clarifying that the reason permanence is attained is because one fundamentally possesses the buddhadhātu; fifth is the praise of the sūtra, namely the single chapter "Bodhisattva"; sixth is the verification of permanence, showing that without eating he manifests eating, without illness he manifests illness, and without perishing he manifests perishing, namely the "Manifestation of Illness Chapter"; seventh is the explanation of what is attained, that one is free from illness due to practice, namely the Five Practices and Ten Merits; eighth is the explanation of meaning through cognitive objects to accomplish practice, namely "Lion's Roar" and "Kāśyapa"; ninth is the refutation of non-Buddhists, namely the "Kauṇḍinya Chapter"; and tenth is the teaching of entrustment, from "Where is Ānanda?" through the end of the sūtra text.
