10.135

案寶亮曰：下文顯出家之人，有三品。在家之人蠲去下品唯出中上也。若不受五戒，而忘身護法令法得通者，此實大勇猛也。出家通法之人，所以應與護法白衣持刀杖者俱者，此就末世之中為論耳。智秀曰：此下第二廣門也。有三翻：第一明在家人護法、第二引證、第三明出家之人護法之法也。從此訖「非持戒者」，得如是名。第一辨在家之人護法，有二翻：第一正明護法：第二迦葉難也，此即第一翻也。

Baoliang comments: The text below reveals that among renouncers, there are three grades. Laypeople omit the lower grade and only have the medium and higher. If one does not take the five precepts, yet forgets one's body to protect the Dharma so that the Dharma can be disseminated, this is truly great valor. As for why renouncers who propagate the Dharma should accompany white-robed laymen who protect the Dharma bearing swords and staves, this is discussed in terms of the final age. Zhixiu says: From here on is the second, extensive section. It has three turns: first, clarifying how laypeople protect the Dharma; second, adducing evidence; third, clarifying the method for renouncers to protect the Dharma. From here until 'those who do not keep the precepts obtain such names', this is the first distinguishing how laypeople protect the Dharma, having two turns: first, directly clarifying the protection of the Dharma; second, Kāśyapa's objection; this is the first turn.
