10.137

案僧亮曰：與刀仗者俱，律有誠制，不名清淨，故須問也。僧宗曰：向列三章門，今欲廣釋護法之相，先假執聲聞教中唯以獨靜為上；今佛釋此非上，以護法為勝也。智秀曰：此下第二翻也。為難之辭雖在比丘，而實為顯在家之人，護法之法。

Sengliang comments: Regarding accompanying those with weapons and staves, the Vinaya has explicit prohibitions, and it is not called purity; hence he must ask. Sengzong says: The three headings were listed previously; now, wishing to broadly explain the marks of protecting the Dharma, he first temporarily adopts the śrāvaka teaching where solitary quietude alone is supreme; now the Buddha explains that this is not supreme, taking protecting the Dharma as superior. Zhixiu says: From here on is the second turn. Although the words of the objection concern monks, in fact they serve to reveal how laypeople protect the Dharma.
