10.51

案僧亮曰：非人非天，故非字；應人名人，故非不字也。僧宗曰：離麁細心相，故非覺觀也。夫名生於形，無狀故無名，應用故有字也。

Sengliang comments: Being neither human nor god, it is not designated; responding as a human, it is named human, hence it is not non-designated. Sengzong says: Free from coarse and subtle mental characteristics, it is neither vitarka nor vicāra. Names arise from physical forms; having no shape, it has no name, but functioning responsively, it has designations.
