Mingjun comments: Above, the cause of permanence was explained, which means taking up the precept against killing out of great compassion. But if one still consumes meat now, one personally engages in conduct that harms compassion; yet one wishes to instruct others with the precept against killing—would one not feel ashamed in one's mind? The precepts are the root of all virtues, and compassion is the basis of myriad practices. If one cuts down the root and harms the basis, how can the branches survive? Zhixiu says: The prohibition against meat-eating begins with this statement. Why should the meaning of 'not permitting' apply only to śrāvakas? Inferring from this, bodhisattvas originally did not eat meat.
