Daosheng comments: Of rich flavours, none goes deeper than eating meat. If the craving for meat is strong, one will surely forget compassion and pity. The greatness of compassion and pity is called the 'seed.' Once the seed is cut off, the principle of long life is severed. Sengzong says: Killing harms great compassion, while eating harms lesser compassion. Because one attains the great based on the lesser, lesser compassion is the seed of great compassion. Another explanation says: The fruit is great compassion, and the cause is lesser compassion; thus causal compassion is the seed of the fruit of compassion. Now that one consumes meat, it goes against the compassion of the causal stage; therefore it is said to cut off the seed of compassion. Huidan says: Eating meat obstructs the lesser compassion that accumulates substantial roots of goodness; how could it give rise to the great compassion of the stage of lineage (gotra) and above?
