12.40

案法瑤曰：啟發如來身密之端也。僧宗曰：祕密之言雖復已拂，然於一化託生始末未能不惑，故指事廣拂，以開權迹也。有兩別：初總就菩薩、第二就釋迦迹也。

Fayao states: "This introduces the secret of the Tathāgata's physical manifestations." Sengzong states: "Although the secret words have already been cleared away, sentient beings were still not free from perplexity regarding the beginning and end of a single transforming lifespan taking birth. Therefore, [the Buddha] points to specific matters and clears them away extensively so as to disclose the provisional traces. There are two distinctions: first, discussing the bodhisattvas in general; second, discussing the traces of Śākyamuni."
