Sengliang notes: Sores are an analogy for suffering. Because it is free from suffering, it is called nirvāṇa. If one only cures oneself, it is not called great extinction; extinguishing all suffering is truly called great extinction. That 'all have already been cured' means having faith; though not immediately healed, it is already the cause of healing. Sengzong says: Above he explained the meaning of 'great'; here he explains the meaning of 'nirvāṇa.' Sores and warts are entanglements; being free from sores and warts is precisely vimokṣa. Here he first clarifies the ability to cure sentient beings, adducing a physician as a metaphor; proceeding downwards, he sets forth the essence and extensively clarifies vimokṣa.
