Sengzong notes: The sūtra states, 'Bodhisattvas of the tenth stage should be known to be like the Buddha.' If there is an elephant king, his gaze and physical appearance resemble the Buddha's. Therefore, the preceding question said: He is not truly an arhat, but his measure is equal to an arhat. The matter indeed corresponds to the analogy. Since the Śrāvaka arhat is adjacent in rank to the Buddha, by his luminous and supreme function of wisdom and his deportment, his measure is equal to the Buddha's arhat. Baoliang says: The arhat has exhausted the bonds of the three realms, yet his trace latencies are not yet removed; this is taken to be analogous to the bodhisattva of the tenth stage whose coarse obstacles of form and mind are exhausted, but the source from which form and mind accumulate and arise has not yet been severed; hence it is taken as an analogy. Zhixiu says: The arhat is the culmination of the four fruits, and the tenth stage is the culmination of the myriad practices; the principle is the same.
