Sengzong notes: Māra is compared to the dog. When a dog wishes to steal, it must see that externally there is no guardian, and internally there is the darkness of night; thus it can enter. Māra is also like this: externally there are no good friends and teachers, and internally there is ignorance covering the mind, so Māra can bring about confusion. The wisdom of hearing is very lowly, analogized to the maidservant. Making use of faint light, examining the truth and falsity of Māra, by the power of the five bindings, Māra immediately departs. Zhixiu says: Exhorting practitioners to examine Māra through principle is precisely the method of examining Māra.
