15.35

案僧亮曰：答意云若菩薩者，非為不爾。我為聲聞故說降魔，以聲聞未習大乘，故須依也。依四依故，得降魔之法耳。智秀曰：答有二意，此第一。且一往許之，明審能降魔，實能近涅槃也。

Sengliang notes: The meaning of the reply is that if it were a bodhisattva, it would not be otherwise. It is for the Śrāvakas that I speak of subduing Māra; because Śrāvakas have not practiced the Mahāyāna, they must rely on them. By relying on the four refuges, they attain the method to subdue Māra. Zhixiu says: The reply has two intentions; this is the first. Provisionally conceding it, he clarifies that if one can indeed subdue Māra, one can truly approach nirvāṇa.
