15.37

案僧亮曰：常理在生死之外，而天眼本以見障外為用，若不能識者，不如肉眼而能識也。僧宗曰：必能降魔，則不假四依也，我為聲聞故說耳。智秀曰：此下正答問，有三翻，此即第一，明應學降魔者唯是聲聞，非都未涉佛法人也，故須四依也。

Sengliang notes: The principle of permanence is outside saṃsāra, while the divine eye originally functions by seeing beyond obstacles; if it cannot recognize this, it is inferior to the fleshly eye that can recognize it. Sengzong says: If one can surely subdue Māra, then one does not depend on the four refuges; I spoke only for the sake of the Śrāvakas. Zhixiu says: Below is the direct reply to the question, having three sections; this is the first, clarifying that those who should learn to subdue Māra are only Śrāvakas, not those who have not entered the Buddha-Dharma at all; thus they require the four refuges.
