15.85

案僧亮曰：煩惱累多，大乘心弱，譬之險難也。慈悲既少也，不能弘通，譬惜粳糧，懼盡不食也。但說小乘資益至寡，譬唯食粟稗也。僧宗曰：深山險難者，譬弘通之道非無其路，而崎嶇難入也。非無大乘經典，祕而不傳，譬貪惜不食也。寶亮曰：小乘化主，譬彼王也。愚癡障重，譬深山也。雖有大乘經典，其味深玄，非己所解，譬之難得。復恐非理，譬懼其有盡。

Sengliang comments: Having many burdens of defilement and a weak mind for the Great Vehicle is compared to the perilous difficulty. Compassion being scarce, he cannot propagate it widely, which is compared to cherishing the non-glutinous rice and not eating it for fear of exhaustion. Expounding only the Small Vehicle, whose nourishing benefit is minimal, is compared to eating only millet and barnyard grass. Sengzong says: The perilous difficulty of deep mountains illustrates that the path of widespread propagation is not without ways through, but is rugged and hard to enter. It is not that there are no Great Vehicle classics, but that they are kept secret and not transmitted, which is compared to greedily cherishing them and not eating them. Baoliang says: The leader who converts others via the Small Vehicle is compared to that king. Heavy obstacles of ignorance are compared to the deep mountains. Although there are Great Vehicle classics, their flavor is deep and abstruse and not understood by oneself, which is compared to being hard to obtain. Furthermore, fearing it might be inappropriate is compared to fearing that it would run out.
