Sengliang notes: Discarding the eight impure things gives rise to the conception of purity in people; such a person is a field of merit. Being called a pure field means that before weeds and grain are separated, no conception of defilement is aroused. Sengzong says: In the answer there are three parables. The first clarifies that the good and bad among the assembly are at first glance difficult to discern; merely seeing pure comportment, one should make offerings. Ordinary beings have not yet attained the divine eye and should properly observe through the four matters. The second clarifies that since the genuine and false are confused, observation through the four matters reveals them only over time from beginning to end, but cannot immediately verify them; one should investigate, question, and trace what they say. The third clarifies that if one cannot differentiate, merely by giving rise to an equal mind, both the ordinary and the holy are obtained. If one investigates in vain without result, one loses the sages and pointlessly generates confusion, which further results in fault. This is the first parable.
