18.141

案道生曰：無我之教非物所嗜，為苦味也。僧亮曰：無常無我濫及法身，有名無實，譬以外塗。僧宗曰：應云醫以藥塗乳，而云母自塗者，取善養之義便也。又釋：為表母之與醫無異體也。

Daosheng comments: The teaching of non-self is not what beings relish; this is the bitter flavor. Sengliang comments: Impermanence and non-self inappropriately extended to the dharmakāya, having the name without the reality; this is analogized by smearing on the outside. Sengzong comments: It should have said that the physician smeared the medicine on the breast, yet saying that the mother smeared it herself is adopted for the convenience of the sense of good nurturing. Another explanation: it shows that the mother and the physician have no different substance.
