Sengliang states: Being overcome by the deviant is called sinking. Having a name without reality is compared to the flesh. Fayao states: Correct faith is slight and shallow, unable to maintain itself firmly, so one eventually comes to speak deviant views as well. Sengzong states: Faith being encroached upon by unfaith, the complete understanding is concealed. Baoliang states: Disciples of the Buddha, with a mind attached to characteristics, speak of the formless; since the principle is formless, it is profound and difficult to manifest. Non-Buddhists, with a mind attached to characteristics, speak of characteristics; the principle is then easily accepted. Transmigrating long through saṃsāra, they eventually lose their original understanding. Following those deviant reckonings, it is therefore said that it sank into the flesh. Daohui's Record states: The reason it says 'into the flesh' is to clarify that it is not permanently lost, but will quickly emerge before long.
