Sengliang states: Taking the false self as true, he did not realize that he had lost the true self. Fayao states: Using the head of deviant delusion, he broke the forehead of correct faith. Once correct faith was broken, how could he know of the existence of the buddhadhātu? Although he did not know of its existence, the ultimate principle remained distinct, like the pearl sunken in the skin. Sengzong states: Having surpassed [deviant views] into an arbitrary view of permanence, he lost what he originally understood. If one knows that permanence resides in the fruit, one securely attains its ground and it has a location. Since it conflicts with what he understood, and the mind is without permanence, it is said that he did not know where it was. Baoliang states: Since the principle of attainment and loss was not what he realized, it is therefore said that he did not know at all.
