18.223

Daosheng states: Promptly thinking he had lost it, he ought to have sought its location; instead he thought it did not exist and considered it an illusion. Sengliang states: Examining and breaking down the five aggregates, nothing is found. 'Illusion' refers to reckoning that all phenomena are empty. 'Weeping' refers to awakening to the fact that all phenomena are nothing other than the eight sufferings. Fayao states: Because his study of the contemplation of non-self was deep, he even went so far as to think he did not know where the true self was. Zhixiu states: Although he heard the partial teaching, he was not immediately subdued, which is compared to answering in alarm. Ultimately believing in the present purport, he said, 'Has my pearl gone away?'
