Daosheng comments: Because he ultimately thought it did not exist, the doctor spoke of the self in order to awaken him. Since the principle is manifested within the body, it is through words that one knows it is manifest. Sengliang comments: This is the second metaphor. Among dharmas, some are non-empty, and there is also an eternal self; it is not as he saw, that everything is suffering. Sengzong comments: This is the fourth metaphor. Having practiced in accordance with the teaching, he had already severed severe inversions. Now the capacity for permanence is about to unfold, explaining why the Buddha-fruit is permanent. This is what sets worldly minds at ease, like comforting and consoling him. Baoliang comments: From here below is the fourth metaphor, illustrating that sentient beings' faculties have matured, and they are capable of hearing of eternal abiding; that is, the teachings of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra serve as words of comforting and consoling.
