18.97

案曇濟曰：遂我本願也。僧宗曰：擬宜之辨耳。佛性是剋期之物，是我分野，不容稱雇夫。雇借所收，其利益少。今以無餘涅槃要其斷結，小果所獲比常為鮮，如雇借也。眾生自除惑而剋果，而言佛雇作者，濟苦既由乎大悲，雖復彼自斷惑，乃至人之要務。

Tanji states: Fulfilling my original vow. Sengzong states: This is merely an adapted discernment. The buddhadhātu is something with a definite term, belonging to one's own sphere, and does not admit of being called hiring. What is gained by hiring and borrowing offers little benefit. Now, demanding the severance of fetters through nirvāṇa without remainder, the attainment of the lesser fruit is slight compared to permanence, like hiring. Sentient beings eliminate delusion themselves to achieve the fruit; yet speaking of the Buddha hiring them to work is because relieving suffering originates from great compassion—though they themselves sever delusion, it is still the essential undertaking of the Supreme Man.
