19.10

案道生曰：菩薩說無我之教，表如來真我，譬聞香也。僧亮曰：譬十地菩薩聞佛說已，能見少分，明性理幽遠也。法瑤曰：行者聞說，知煩惱之下有佛性也。僧宗曰：有謂得聞慧之解也。雖無十地慧眼能見，然信教生解，必知有也。智秀曰：譬過去佛始時微知，如彼聞香知當有藥，終能修行得成佛果也。

Daosheng comments: When bodhisattvas teach the doctrine of non-self to signify the Tathāgata's true self, this is compared to smelling the fragrance. Sengliang comments: This compares to bodhisattvas of the tenth bhūmi who, having heard what the Buddha taught, can see a slight portion, clarifying that the nature and principle are profound and distant. Fayao comments: When practitioners hear it taught, they know that beneath defilements there is the buddhadhātu. Sengzong comments: 'Someone' refers to obtaining understanding from the wisdom born of hearing. Although they lack the wisdom eye of the tenth bhūmi to see it, nevertheless by having faith in the teaching and generating understanding, they certainly know it exists. Zhixiu comments: This compares to past Buddhas who initially had subtle knowledge, like smelling the fragrance and knowing there must be the medicine, and were ultimately able to practice and achieve the Buddha-fruit.
