Sengliang states: This matches the third simile. Sengzong states: These words are directed specifically to the eleventh objection. The objection argued that when the body is severed, the self is likewise severed. The matched answer states: it is said to exist only because it is not apart from the consciousness at the causal stage; how could one demand that it be identical with the aggregates? If the branch-aggregates perish, the self would be severed. Baoliang states: This clarifies the nature of the primary cause. Its substance and nature cannot be altered, so none can kill or harm it. The flesh and blood of saṃsāra are evoked by partial causes and can be injured; the nature of the primary cause is natural and spontaneous, not produced by causes, and is therefore indestructible.
