20.104

案道生曰：若修得為用，是故取耳。得非修故，故名為竊。僧亮曰：釋所以忘也。眼視譬聞慧，手觸譬思慧，故取譬脩慧也。昔聞雖信，意不思議，況起脩慧而取耶？所以忘本解也。

Daosheng notes: "If one cultivates and obtains it for application, that is taking it intentionally. Obtaining it not through cultivation is why it is called stealing." Sengliang notes: "This explains why he forgot it. Seeing with the eyes is compared to the wisdom of hearing; touching with the hand is compared to the wisdom of reflection; intentionally taking it is compared to the wisdom of cultivation. Although he believed in what he heard formerly, his mind did not reflect upon it, much less give rise to the wisdom of cultivation to take it. This is why he forgot the fundamental understanding."
