Sengliang notes: "From beginning to end, they always conducted the transformation of selflessness." Fayao notes: "What the scriptures and teachings explain is entirely devoid of the self conceived by that person, how much less could the conceived self be heard from a bodhisattva? The sequential enumeration of four kings seeking and failing to find the knife clarifies that although the thousand sages are different, their scriptures and teachings are identical; although sentient beings are of ten thousand varieties, their conceiving of a self is one and the same. The sequence of four kings represents the fourth Buddha in the succession of the thousand sages."
