Sengliang comments: 'Indefinite' means not one-sided. Because nirvāṇa is real, it is called subtle existence; because saṃsāra is unreal, it is called non-existence. Cause and fruit are continuous; having two characteristics within a single entity that are indefinite clarifies that the principle of phenomena is not one-sided. Baoliang comments: Providing a simile for those who incur loss. Being about to make a simile, he first cites the annihilation and permanence conceived by those who incur loss. Conceiving annihilation is non-existence, and conceiving permanence is existence; since these are arbitrary reckonings, they are indefinite. Below, he cites the different natures of the four great elements as an analogy, like conceiving permanence.
