20.50

案僧亮曰：先有酪相者，先有甘也。不能自變者，待醪乃能變多為少。甘多為乳、甘少為酪，故不一也；同是甘性，性不異故，是中道義。寶亮曰：先有酪相者，因中說果必有，故言有也。

Sengliang states: That 'there is already the characteristic of curd' means that there is already sweetness. That 'it cannot transform itself' means that it must await the fermenting agent to transform the predominant into the lesser. When sweetness is predominant it is milk; when sweetness is lesser it is curd. Hence they are not one. Yet they share the same nature of sweetness, and because their nature is not different, this is the meaning of the Middle Way. Baoliang states: That 'there is already the characteristic of curd' means that speaking of the effect within the cause, it is bound to exist, so it is said to exist.
