23.24

案僧亮曰：毒藥譬佛性。以始聞故，譬新也。大眾譬有為行也，聲者譬讀誦也，死者譬煩惱滅也。法瑤曰：常理如藥，文字如鼓，以藥毒故，聞鼓則死。其理深故，聽之者罪滅。

Sengliang comments: The poison is likened to the buddhadhātu. Because it is newly heard, it is likened to 'new'. The great assembly is likened to conditioned practices; the sound is likened to reading and recitation; death is likened to the destruction of afflictions. Fayao comments: The true principle of permanence is like the medicine; the text is like the drum. Because the medicine is poisonous, when one hears the drum, one dies. Because its principle is deep, for those who listen to it, sin is eliminated.
