30.40

案僧亮曰：受責既不以一下為樂故樂，故樂非橫也。佛言樂實不虛者，以免受為樂，不可空中說樂也。曇愛曰：迦葉領解非難也，佛即述成也。寶亮曰：釋第三實樂義也。三塗中苦，人天實無，無處與佛何異？故知非虛說也。

Sengliang comments: Since in receiving the punishment he does not take the single stroke as pleasure, pleasure is not erroneous. When the Buddha says that pleasure is truly not false, it is because avoiding receipt is taken as pleasure; one cannot speak of pleasure out of thin air. Tan'ai says: Kāśyapa's comprehension is not an objection, and the Buddha immediately affirms it. Baoliang says: He explains the third meaning of 'real pleasure'. The suffering within the three evil paths truly does not exist in humans and devas; how does this state of absence differ from the Buddha? Therefore, we know that it is not a false statement.
