36.17

案僧亮曰。所因根本者。先說因緣。後說偈者。是也。僧宗曰：為因緣故說偈，不以偈為因緣也。寶亮曰：隨有人犯罪，則因事制戒，故名因緣。以此制戒之因緣，得異於餘部也。

Sengliang states: “The fundamental source relied upon” refers to first stating the causes and conditions and afterwards speaking the verse. Sengzong states: Verses are spoken for the sake of causes and conditions; causes and conditions are not taken as verses. Baoliang states: Whenever someone committed a transgression, precepts were formulated based on the incident; hence it is named “causes and conditions.” Through these causes and conditions of formulating precepts, it is distinguished from the other divisions.
