36.23

案僧宗曰：此云本生經也。寶亮曰：如《法華》中分本生、本事為二，今此中但取過去行菩薩時作粟散王等事義以為一部也。若舉其本生，則生中之事亦隨。故據通而迹別也。

Sengzong states: Here it is translated as “past life sūtras.” Baoliang states: As in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra where jātaka and itivṛttaka are divided into two, now here it only takes the events and meanings of his past practice of the bodhisattva path, such as becoming a minor king, to constitute a single division. If one mentions his past births, the events within those births naturally follow. Therefore, based on the general, the specific traces [are understood].
