Sengliang states: Explaining that natures have shallow and deep, and curing defilements requires companions, these are the four meanings. Above it was said that anger and attachment are two distinct things; now it is explained that anger has lower and higher degrees, and the cures have shallow and deep degrees, and they also depend on companions. Sengzong states: As for 'as you said, loving-kindness can sever anger', this brings up the first objection; although both can cure anger, yet anger has coarse and subtle forms: the mind of loving-kindness severs the coarse, and the mind of compassion severs the subtle. Now, since what is severed is distinct, how could the severing agent alone not be distinct? The six phrases below explain the meaning of coarse and subtle. As for 'in mutual contrast as companions', although loving-kindness and compassion are companion classes, because they contrast in coarse and subtle, there are four.
