38.16

案僧亮曰：聞上以五譬釋地名，今問佛者，為菩薩時斷人命根，既不與地義相稱而不墮地獄，進退未了。

Sengliang comments: Having heard the five similes above explaining the name of the stage, he now asks the Buddha: when you were a bodhisattva, you severed a person's life-faculty, which did not correspond to the meaning of this stage, yet you did not fall into hell; thus the resolution of moving forward or stepping back remains unclear.
