38.18

案僧宗曰：向舉殺婆羅門以難因地之身業也，今舉罵提婆達以難果地之口業也。若身口如是，意業自可知也。寶亮曰：迦葉作兩難，有四關，據始引終，事無遺也。故下更舉事以審佛復不應爾也。

Sengzong comments: Previously, killing the brāhmaṇa was cited to challenge physical karma at the causal stage; now, scolding Devadatta is cited to challenge verbal karma at the resultant stage. If body and speech are like this, mental karma may naturally be known. Baoliang says: Kāśyapa raised two objections with four barriers, relying on the beginning and drawing upon the end, leaving nothing out. Therefore, below he further cites facts to examine why the Buddha should not have acted in this way.
