Sengliang says: Taking ascetic practices and the like as the path, it is impermanent. Taking emptiness as the path, it is permanent. A bodhisattva slightly sees the buddhadhātu, gaining the name 'permanent'. Non-Buddhists subdue fetters, but because they arise again, it is called impermanent. Sengzong says: He first explains that permanence must reside in the Buddha; because it is covered by afflictions, one cannot see it; the day one sees it, it does not newly come to exist. Baoliang says: If the path were impermanent, how could it enable practitioners to sever delusions and become noble ones?
