4.29

案道生曰：為善乖於恒性，自策所以成勤，如農不失時，收果萬倍也。僧亮曰：檀是始行，須自策乃成也。道慧記曰：始習之善與本惡性乖，譬之庸役也。勤策則收果萬倍，譬之農作。

Daosheng notes: Doing good runs contrary to one's habitual nature; driving oneself is the means to achieve diligence, just as a farmer does not miss the season and reaps a myriad-fold harvest. Sengliang notes: Giving is an initial practice; it requires driving oneself to be accomplished. The Record of Daohui says: Goodness when first practiced runs contrary to one's original evil nature, which is likened to hired labor; through diligent exertion one reaps a myriad-fold harvest, which is likened to farming.
